Thank you for your interest in a grant-funded, 11-week Diversity Fellowship at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee! The Aquarium hopes this experience will help guide and empower conservation-minded students to develop solutions to complex conservation challenges in our communities and gain valuable hands-on work experience. Our history of giving high-potential students the opportunity to work at our Aquarium has shown that such professional experience opens new career options for students from all walks of life. Selected Fellows will be paid a $12 hourly wage along with campus housing and parking.

Conservation Fellows will be exposed to a several conservation science-related positions working with the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute team.  Areas include conservation aquaculture for reintroduction biology, field biology surveying endangered species, and translating scientific concepts for educational audiences.  This hands-on opportunity will offer students an increased understanding of concepts in freshwater biology, ichthyology, herpetology, and biodiversity conservation.

Diversity Fellowship Requirements:

  • Minority/Diversity* college student with science or education major
  • Able to commit to the full internship of 11-weeks (May 14th to July 29th 2018)
  • Able to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Able to withstand outdoor conditions in the summer season
  • Responsible for own transportation from campus housing to the Conservation Institute (approx.10-min drive)
  • Show a high level of interest in science, education or conservation
  • Provide a college transcript with a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Submit an unofficial transcript and fellowship application before Monday, April 2, 2018 at 5:00 PM

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform conservation duties which may include care of animals in reintroduction programs, fieldwork on southeastern rivers and streams, and data collection in laboratory settings
  • Provide exemplary interpretation and assistance in programs
  • Maintain appropriate logs and records for data collection
  • Interact with staff, volunteers, and public in a professional and ethical manner

 

Wages:

  • 40 work hours per week
  • $12.00 per hour
  • University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus housing & campus parking
  • Paid parking near the Aquarium during work hours
